| From a small
rural town in the Midwest, she had the drive to excel from early on. One
of five children, she overcame her childhood fear of needles and became
first a CNA, then an LPN, and finally a Med-Surg RN. But she still wanted
to expand her horizons, so she checked into traveling. Was it for her? “Absolutely!” said Andrea S. - adventure-seeker, family woman, and Aureus Med-Surg RN! |

“I love a challenge, and I’ve always sought new challenges for myself,” stated Andrea. “When I heard about travel nursing, I decided to take a look. I really wanted to expand my career insights – working only in a small rural community, I felt that I needed to have more exposure to be the best RN I could be.” Andrea saw that travel nursing held many opportunities.
“Traveling offered better pay, more opportunity to learn new things,
and the chance for better positions after traveling because of a better
resume. It just seemed natural that this should be my next challenge!” With her husband and 12-year-old son still at home, was traveling the right choice? “Without a doubt!” said Andrea. “Early on, I had assignments that took me further from home, and that was much harder, but now I have an assignment that works well for me.” Andrea is now able to work for Aureus in an area not far from her hometown. Only 70 miles from home, she is able to drive back on a regular basis. “My Aureus staffing supervisor really worked with me to find an assignment that worked for my life. This is just right!” Because she has worked with her current facility to form a schedule that also works well with family, she works 6 to 7 days, and then has 6 to 7 days off. While working, she lives in the town where her facility is located, but goes home for her days off. “Its great – this way I get to schedule all of my son’s school meetings on my off days, and spend time at home. Between that and daily phone calls, it works out really well.” Her son is also able to visit her frequently and take advantage of the pool in her apartment complex, a nice treat during hot Kansas summers! “My current assignment and schedule make
this an easy situation for everyone in my family. I really love my apartment,
too, which makes it even better. To be honest, it is wonderful to be able
to have some time alone!” A sentiment only the parent of a 12-year-old
boy could fully appreciate!
“We’ve made it a tradition to go out to breakfast after work. It’s a great time to get to know other people and get good information on other facilities and other travel companies,” she stated. Andrea also advised talking with the hospital’s Guest Services staff for information about the new city you find yourself in. “They usually know a lot about the surrounding area, and are familiar with what travelers need. They can be a great resource.” | |||||||||||||||||||||
Finally, Andrea stressed the importance of finding a good travel company. She researched and talked with many companies before joining the Aureus team. “I had information about a lot of companies before I made a decision. I ran into a nurse friend who recommended I look into Aureus, and the rest is history! I called, I really liked the Aureus staffing supervisor I spoke to, and they gave me very prompt attention, a good sign in a travel company!” “You have to work with a staffing supervisor or recruiter that you like, and who comes across as a ‘real person’,” said Andrea. “My current facility has a lot of needs, and the positions here are very challenging. Aureus was really honest with me about what to expect, and I appreciate that. Some travelers in my facility who work for other travel companies weren’t told the truth and weren’t prepared.” |
